Speeding lorry hits bike and crushes schoolboy near Mani Square

In the busy EM Bypass near Mani Sqaure, a heartbreaking accident turned a simple school commute into a nightmare today morning. A 12-year-old student from Bidhannagar Municipal School was riding on his father's bike and heading to his school along the Bypass. Suddenly, a speeding truck slammed into their bike at the Bengal Chemical crossing, the boy flung off and fell down and the lorry then crushed him further trapping beneath its heavy wheels. Eyewitnesses rushed to the scene, their hearts pounding as they lifted the vehicle just enough to free the injured teen, who lay motionless amid the chaos. This shocking incident highlights the dangers lurking in everyday traffic in the busy school/office hours, where one split-second mistake can shatter young lives forever.

The father, still in shock, watched helplessly. Quick-thinking locals grabbed the truck driver on the spot, preventing his escape, and together they pulled the boy from under the massive tires. Rushed to a private hospital near the EM bypass, the student is now battling critical injuries, with doctors working tirelessly to stabilize him. Phoolbagan police station arrived the spot swiftly, taking the driver into custody and launching a full probe into the crash. Early reports point to the truck's reckless speed as the main culprit, a grim reminder of how overloaded roads claim innocent victims daily.

As the city wakes up to yet another tale of road tragedy, questions swirl about road safety in Kolkata's congested hubs. The family clings to hope for the boy's recovery, while locals demand stricter checks on heavy vehicles during peak hours. This accident isn't just a statistic—it's a wake-up call for all of us sharing these streets, urging drivers to slow down and authorities to act before more dreams are derailed. The investigation continues, but for now, prayers and support pour in for the brave young survivor fighting back from the brink. There have been repeated incidents of Kolkata school children dying in road accidents. Last year, two students died in road accidents in Saltlake and Bansdroni. In August 2023, a class 2 student died due to a road accident in Behala. The student, named Souranil Sarkar, was crushed by a lorry along with his father who was also injured in the lorry collision.
